Diabetes symptoms and early physical warning signs
Diabetes can manifest through various physical signs, including changes to the nails and systemic symptoms like excessive thirst or weight loss. Early detection is critical to prevent severe complications such as foot ulcers or gangrene.
Nail changes may include vertical lines, discoloration, brittleness, or ingrown nails. These changes are often driven by poor blood circulation, nerve damage, and metabolic abnormalities caused by high blood sugar. Specifically, diabetes can lead to nail fungus (onychomycosis) and thickening of the nail bed due to weakened immune function and impaired nutrient supply.
Common systemic symptoms include increased thirst (polydipsia), frequent urination (polyuria), and unexplained weight loss despite normal food intake. Other indicators include fatigue, blurred vision, and slow-healing wounds. Because type 2 diabetes often presents with few noticeable symptoms in its early stages, medical professionals emphasize the importance of monitoring HbA1c levels and blood glucose through regular health checkups.
