Diabetes warning signs and dietary blood sugar triggers
Health experts highlight several physical warning signs and dietary factors related to high blood sugar and diabetes. Physical indicators visible on the hands can include yellowed or brittle nails caused by restricted blood flow to the fingertips, persistent itching on the hands and arms due to decreased sweat gland function, and the appearance of ring-shaped swellings or nodules on the back of the hands.
Regarding nutrition, certain non-sweet foods can cause rapid spikes in blood glucose due to a high Glycemic Index (GI). Refined carbohydrates such as white bread, white rice, and mashed potatoes are noted for their ability to convert quickly into glucose. To mitigate these effects, experts suggest opting for whole grains, brown rice, or quinoa, and pairing carbohydrates with fiber, protein, or healthy fats to slow digestion.
