Diabetes Wellness Sverige warns of rising type 2 diabetes risks

Anders Lundgren, Secretary General of Diabetes Wellness Sverige, highlights the rising risk of type 2 diabetes, noting that moderate overweight combined with a sedentary lifestyle significantly increases vulnerability. The disease often develops slowly over several years as blood sugar levels rise and cells become resistant to insulin.

In Sweden, it is estimated that up to 500,000 people may have type 2 diabetes without knowing it. The condition can double the risk of heart attack and lead to serious complications such as kidney failure, foot ulcers, and impaired vision.

While age and genetics are non-modifiable factors, lifestyle changes can mitigate risk. Recommended preventative measures include regular physical activity, reducing sugar intake, and consuming more vegetables, whole grains, and fish. Early detection through blood sugar testing is advised if symptoms like increased thirst, fatigue, or frequent urination occur.
