Diabetesforeningen urges binding national goals for healthy life years
The Danish Diabetes Association is calling on the Folketinget to establish a binding national goal for increasing healthy life years within the upcoming public health law. The organization emphasizes that while Danes live long lives, many years are spent dealing with illness and limitations. Currently, Denmark ranks 20th out of 28 European countries regarding healthy life years, trailing significantly behind Sweden.
As a first step, the association suggests utilizing the 2027 budget to provide glucose sensors to people with diabetes, a measure the government has previously promised. According to Claus Richter, CEO of the Danish Diabetes Association, health should be viewed as the foundation of welfare and the economy rather than merely an expense.
The association notes that for those with type 2 diabetes who do not take insulin, periodic sensor use is estimated to cost 118 million DKK annually but provides a societal gain of approximately 135 million DKK. For insulin users, these sensors are vital tools for managing life-saving treatments safely.
