Diabulimie: Eating Disorder Among Youth with Type‑1 Diabetes

Diabulimie is an eating‑disorder pattern that occurs in children and adolescents living with type‑1 diabetes. It is not yet listed as a separate diagnosis in medical handbooks. Typical signs include deliberate omission of insulin doses and highly irregular eating habits, which can be hard to spot because young patients often conceal their behaviour.

Early detection is crucial, yet challenging. Experts stress that a coordinated effort among physicians, families and the patients themselves can improve disease management. Professor Anna Lucia Ogliari of the University Vita‑Salute San Raffaele and head of the child‑adolescent clinical psychology unit at Ospedale San Raffaele Turro notes that the strict, continuous monitoring of carbohydrate intake, regular physical activity and rigorous blood‑glucose control can foster complex eating patterns. Studies show that disordered‑eating behaviours are more common in youths with type‑1 diabetes than in their healthy peers.
