Diakonie Bremen terminates employee over AfD candidacy

The Verein für Innere Mission Bremen has terminated the employment of hospice worker Martina Müller following her decision to run as an AfD candidate in the upcoming local elections for the Friesland district council and Wangerland municipal council.

Diakonie Bremen has expressed support for the decision, stating that the active candidacy for an organization classified as reliably right-wing extremist creates a severe tension with the fundamental values and mission of the church and Diakonie. The organization emphasized that while it remains politically neutral, it is “wertegebunden” (bound by values), prioritizing human dignity, solidarity, and human rights.

Müller has announced her intention to challenge the dismissal through a wrongful termination lawsuit.
