Diakopto–Kalavryta Railway closure sparks local protests and political inquiries

Residents and local organizations are organizing protests to demand the reopening of the Diakopto–Kalavryta railway, which has been out of service since March 12, 2026. The suspension has caused significant concern regarding the local economy and the preservation of this historic transport route.

Local stakeholders have scheduled a public assembly in Diakopto and a demonstration at the Kalavryta Court to address the shutdown. The Municipality of Kalavryta has also requested a meeting with the Deputy Minister of Transport to seek concrete solutions.

Member of Parliament Sia Anagnostopoulou has formally questioned the Minister of Infrastructure and Transport regarding the lack of a restoration plan, secured funding, and a clear timeline. She noted that a recent decision by the Audit Court to cancel a safety study contract between the Region of Western Greece and the Technical Chamber has caused further delays. Anagnostopoulou is seeking clarity on geological risk assessments, environmental compliance, and the total economic cost of the prolonged suspension.
