Karviná mining tower demolished at former ČSA mine
The state-owned enterprise Diamo carried out a controlled demolition of a 70-meter-tall skip mining tower at the former Československá armáda (ČSA) coal mine in Karviná, Czech Republic. The structure, which weighed approximately 19,000 tonnes, was brought down using 147 kilograms of explosives placed across 948 drilled holes.
The tower stood above the ČSA3 shaft, which reached a depth of 1,005 meters. The demolition is part of a systematic effort by Diamo to liquidate mining infrastructure and perform environmental remediation following the mine's closure in 2021. During the operation, local authorities implemented road closures and public transit detours to manage crowds and ensure safety.
The event drew dozens of onlookers, including many former miners who gathered to witness the end of a local landmark. While the demolition marks a milestone in the site's decommissioning, discussions continue regarding which remaining buildings might be designated as cultural monuments by the Ministry of Culture.
