Diamo explores gold mining reactivation in Zlaté Hory

The Czech state-owned company Diamo is conducting geological research into the potential reactivation of gold mining in the Zlaté Hory region, located in the Opava Mountains near the Polish border. Recent estimates suggest the deposit contains approximately 11 tons of gold, along with 5,642 tons of copper and over 26,000 tons of zinc.

Diamo indicates that while gold is the primary target, other metals would be produced as byproducts. The company suggests that developing domestic deposits could reduce the Czech Republic's reliance on imported raw materials and strengthen national resource security. If extraction proceeds, it is estimated that roughly 6.2 tons of gold could be mined over a 10-year period.

Despite the economic potential, the project faces challenges. It is currently in the analysis and research phase, and the proposal has met with opposition from local authorities and concerns regarding environmental and social impacts. The region has a long mining history, with extraction activities having ceased over 30 years ago.
