Diana Hopeson recounts abuse and death threats in first marriage
Gospel musician and former Musicians Union of Ghana (MUSIGA) president Diana Hopeson has publicly detailed the physical abuse and emotional trauma she experienced during her first marriage.
In an interview with Kafui Dey, Hopeson described a cycle of violence characterized by extreme behavioral crises followed by deceptive periods of calm. She recounted specific instances of domestic violence, including being whipped with a belt and receiving threats of death. She also recalled a terrifying incident where her then-husband threatened to ram their vehicle into a truck during a dispute.
Hopeson noted the difficulty of leaving the relationship due to the repetitive nature of the abuse and the professional partnership they shared, as her husband played a significant role in her music and ministry. She expressed the emotional complexity of the divorce, stating she had to mourn her husband while he was still alive and criticized how he publicly portrayed her as the sole party responsible for the marriage's end.
