Diane Abbott and Joani Reid readmitted to Labour Party

Veteran Labour MP Diane Abbott and Scottish Labour MP Joani Reid have both been readmitted to the Labour Party and had the parliamentary whip restored. Abbott’s suspension stemmed from comments on racism and a separate tweet that referred to the Israeli Defence Force as the “Jewish Defence Force”. She received a formal warning for that tweet, apologized and said the wording conflated the actions of the Israeli state with the Jewish community. Reid’s suspension followed the arrest of her husband, David Taylor, on suspicion of assisting a foreign intelligence service linked to China; she voluntarily stepped down from the whip and has now been reinstated.

The readmissions were made after an independent disciplinary review approved by an independent review board, and Labour officials said the decisions were taken without input from party leadership. New party leader and Prime Minister Andy Burnham was not involved in the process. The moves have drawn mixed reactions: Jewish groups expressed concern over Abbott’s return, while a petition signed by tens of thousands of Labour members and many party figures welcomed the reinstatements.
