Von Furstenberg rose to prominence in the 1970s following the 1974 debut of her iconic wrap dress. The design concept was inspired by observing Julie Eisenhower, daughter of Richard Nixon, wearing a wrap top during Watergate-era news coverage. The dress became a massive commercial success, with one million units sold by 1976.

Born Diane Simone Michele Halfin in Brussels, Belgium, in 1946, the designer shared details regarding her family history, noting that her mother was a Holocaust survivor.
