Diastolic impairment linked to atrial fibrillation during heart attack

A prospective study has investigated the relationship between diastolic dysfunction and the development of new-onset atrial fibrillation (NOAF) in patients experiencing acute myocardial infarction (AMI).

The research, involving 150 adults with AMI, aimed to clarify whether diastolic impairment serves as a central mechanism for NOAF, a clinically relevant issue often associated with elevated filling pressures. Participants were categorized into those who developed NOAF during the acute phase and those who maintained sinus rhythm, following standardized clinical, laboratory, and echocardiographic assessments.
