Dibang Valley mithuns hit by Foot-and-Mouth Disease outbreak

The Foot-and-Mouth Disease (FMD) outbreak in the Dibang Valley district of Arunachal Pradesh has affected 1,402 mithuns across 21 villages. Since the disease was first reported in late July, 267 animals have died, while 1,225 have received treatment.

Laboratory testing by the National Institute of Foot and Mouth Disease (NIFMD) in Odisha confirmed the outbreak is caused by FMD serotype ‘O’. In response, a four-member Rapid Response Team (RRT) and local veterinary personnel are conducting treatment, surveillance, and awareness activities.

District Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Officer Dr. Dammo Riba emphasized the importance of vaccination and urged livestock owners to cooperate with the department’s free routine vaccination drives. Officials have also requested that the public verify livestock mortality figures through official departmental records to prevent the spread of inaccurate information.
