Dicky Cheung: The career of the actor famous for playing Sun Wukong

Dicky Cheung, the actor widely recognized for his portrayal of Sun Wukong in the 1996 TVB television version of ‘Journey to the West’, has experienced a career marked by both immense success and significant challenges. Known for his youthful and mischievous interpretation of the character, Cheung gained widespread fame across Asia.

Born in 1965, Cheung entered the entertainment industry after winning a singing competition hosted by TVB. His career was further supported by the mentorship of the late Hong Kong film icon Leslie Cheung. Following his breakout role in ‘Journey to the West’, he starred in several notable productions, including ‘The Deer and the Cauldron’ and ‘Fong Sai-yuk’.

Despite being considered a major talent and a contemporary of Stephen Chow, Cheung's career faced turbulence, including a five-year ban from performing, leading to a more private life in his later years.
