DICT supports House decision to defer budget over Meta safety concerns

The Philippine Department of Information and Communications Technology (DICT) has expressed support for the House of Representatives’ decision to defer the agency's budget. The move comes as lawmakers seek answers regarding Meta’s handling of online safety issues.

DICT Secretary Henry Aguda stated the agency respects the House’s oversight powers, particularly concerning the online sexual abuse and exploitation of children (OSAEC) and child sexual abuse and exploitation materials (CSAEM). The DICT noted that while other technology platforms have shown meaningful cooperation, Meta has failed to meet its responsibilities regarding youth safety.

The agency highlighted persistent concerns on major platforms, including illegal online gambling, cyberbullying, and mental health risks such as social media addiction and depression among Filipino youth. The DICT emphasized that technology companies must implement measurable safeguards and cooperate transparently with Philippine authorities to protect the welfare of children.
