DiDi Autonomous Driving begins driverless R2 robotaxi trials
DiDi Autonomous Driving has launched fully driverless passenger service trials for its next-generation R2 robotaxi. The trials are currently taking place in selected demonstration areas in Beijing and Guangzhou, where the vehicle is bookable via the DiDi app.
Developed in collaboration with GAC Aion, the R2 is a purpose-built vehicle designed for Level 4 autonomous passenger services. It features a comprehensive sensor suite consisting of 33 sensors, including LiDAR, cameras, 4D millimeter-wave radar, infrared cameras, and audio sensors. The vehicle's central computing platform delivers over 2,000 TOPS of GPU computing power and utilizes a triple-domain fusion architecture to improve perception and decision-making in complex urban environments.
Designed for global deployment, the R2 meets both C-NCAP and Euro NCAP five-star safety standards. The interior is optimized for passengers in the absence of a driver, featuring increased rear space, adjustable seating, a 17.3-inch ceiling-mounted entertainment screen, and an AI voice interaction system for controlling cabin functions. DiDi plans to expand its international operations to the United Arab Emirates, with pilot programs expected to begin in 2026.
