Didier Deschamps drops legal appeal against Daniel Riolo
Didier Deschamps has decided to drop his legal appeal against journalist Daniel Riolo, ending a long-standing defamation dispute. The conflict originated from comments made by Riolo regarding the management of Karim Benzema during the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.
Deschamps had initially lost a first-instance court case when the tribunal ruled that Riolo's remarks were “pejorative but not defamatory.” While Deschamps' legal team expressed disagreement with the technical aspects of that ruling—noting that the court recognized Riolo's intent to discredit him—the former France national team manager has chosen to withdraw the appeal.
His lawyer, Me Wekstein, stated that Deschamps wishes to “prefer turning toward the future” and seeks to regain a sense of tranquility in his daily life following his exceptional tenure as the national team coach.
