Didier Deschamps' team rules and past clash with French federation chief revealed

Former French Football Federation president Noël Le Graët revealed a previously hidden moment of tension between himself and national team manager Didier Deschamps, describing an ego clash that could have jeopardised their working relationship. Le Graët, who led the federation for 13 years until 2023, said the disagreement was “visceral” and stemmed from overlapping authority over the team’s strategic direction.

Deschamps, who has coached the France side since 2012 and guided it to the 2018 World Cup title and the 2022 final, explained how he has adapted his management to a new generation of players. He now allows limited use of mobile phones before meetings, shortens team talks to about ten minutes and emphasizes concise communication. “Les codes ont changé,” Deschamps said, noting that flexibility is needed while maintaining overall authority.
