Luigi Pantisano may support CDU to block AfD in Saxony-Anhalt

Luigi Pantisano, leader of the Left party (Die Linke), has indicated that his party may support a CDU Minister-President in Saxony-Anhalt to prevent the AfD from taking power. This comes ahead of the state elections on September 6, where polls suggest the AfD holds a significant lead, potentially allowing them to lead a state government for the first time in post-war German history.

Pantisano also retracted previous controversial remarks in which he compared the CDU to the AfD and described the CDU's politics as 'fascist,' stating, 'My statement was wrong and I have apologized for it.'

In a separate political context regarding the Berlin elections, Pantisano reaffirmed the Left party's commitment to the expropriation of large housing corporations, such as Vonovia and Deutsche Wohnen, to lower rents. He argued that these companies prioritize shareholder returns over providing affordable housing, citing a previous public referendum in Berlin as the mandate for this policy.
