Berlin's Die Linke party faces scrutiny over extremist and clan ties

The Berlin branch of the Die Linke party is facing scrutiny regarding potential ties to extremist organizations and organized crime. German domestic intelligence (Verfassungsschutz) has indicated a need to investigate local networks following reports that party top candidate Elif Eralp met with representatives of Kurdish organizations, including groups identified by authorities as fronts for the banned PKK.

Further controversy surrounds Die Linke MP Ferat Koçak, who has advocated for lifting the PKK ban and reportedly maintained contact with the Remmo clan, a prominent organized crime family in Berlin. Issa Remmo was recently seen attending a Die Linke election victory party. These developments have caused significant concern among Berlin police unions.

Separately, research from the Berlin Monitor addresses allegations of antisemitism within the party. The study suggests that while political discourse regarding Israel is intense, the data indicates that individuals identifying with the political left in Berlin show lower tendencies toward antisemitism compared to those in the political center or right.
