Die Mobiliar to invest 200 million francs in affordable Swiss housing
Swiss insurance company Die Mobiliar has announced a 200 million Swiss franc investment to construct approximately 1,000 affordable apartments across Switzerland. The initiative, timed with the company’s 200th anniversary, aims to address acute housing shortages and rising rental costs in urban centers and regions with high demand.
To ensure long-term affordability, the new residences will operate under a ‘cost-rent’ principle. This means rents will be tied strictly to the costs of construction, financing, and maintenance, rather than being driven by speculative market rates or profit-oriented returns. The project intends to provide relief for families, young adults, and elderly residents who are currently vulnerable to high market rents.
As part of this strategy, the company has founded Dedicasa AG and is currently reviewing several construction projects in various locations. By partnering with housing cooperatives and focusing on the non-profit sector, the insurer seeks to bypass traditional speculative development models.
