Die Zeit editor calls for legal action against AI companies
Jochen Wegner, editor-in-chief of the German newspaper Die Zeit, has advocated for consistent legal action against artificial intelligence companies that use journalistic content without permission. Speaking at the Medientage München, Wegner characterized unauthorized use of content as ‘data theft’ and argued that media companies must sue providers to protect their intellectual property.
However, Wegner noted that litigation alone is not a sustainable business model. He suggested a dual strategy of defense and cooperation. While Die Zeit employs technical measures to prevent unauthorized access, the outlet is also participating in a pilot project with Google. This collaboration allows the tech giant to use a limited selection of articles for AI applications in exchange for payment, under strictly defined usage terms.
Wegner also highlighted potential new revenue streams, such as subscriptions where users access various media contents through AI assistants, provided there are clear rules and fair compensation. Additionally, he pointed to the benefits of new distribution technologies, noting that Die Zeit’s dedicated TikTok team has helped reach younger audiences and support the core business.
