Diego Antônio Gutierry Silva Gomes sentenced for fraud against elderly in Ibirapitanga, Brazil

A bank correspondent in Ibirapitanga, Brazil, Diego Antônio Gutierry Silva Gomes, was sentenced by the Ubatã Criminal Court to seven years, six months and six days in prison for defrauding a 66‑year‑old retiree. The court also ordered compensation of R$ 53,427.80 to the victim and authorized the seizure of the defendant’s bank accounts and financial assets. The fraud involved unauthorized loans, account openings and fund transfers carried out under the pretense of trust.

Separately, Brazil's legislative chamber is debating PL 1453/2026, a proposal that would require banks and other authorized financial institutions to offer an optional, free two‑factor authentication service for elderly customers. The measure, still pending approval, would let seniors designate a trusted person to confirm transactions such as electronic transfers, high‑value payments, credit contracts and critical account changes, without granting that person full access to the account.
