Diego Cruz resigns as Almería Culture Councilor after alcohol test

Diego Cruz Mendoza, the Almería City Council delegate for Culture, Education, and Traditions, has announced his resignation following a positive breathalyzer test. The incident occurred during the early hours of a Monday as Cruz was leaving the Almería Fair in an official vehicle.

National Police officers intercepted the vehicle after noticing strange driving behavior. Subsequent testing by local police revealed a blood alcohol level of 0.75 milligrams per liter of exhaled air. Under the Spanish Penal Code, exceeding the 0.60 mg/L threshold classifies the incident as a criminal offense rather than a mere administrative sanction.

In a public statement, Cruz admitted to the error, stating, “I fully assume responsibility for my actions.” He noted that while the incident resulted in no material or personal damage, he resigned to maintain “coherence and exemplary conduct.” He also issued a sincere apology to the citizens of Almería, his colleagues, and his family.
