Diego Garcia becomes vital US Navy hub after Middle East infrastructure damage

The Diego Garcia military base has become a vital logistical hub for the United States Navy following extensive Iranian strikes on U.S. infrastructure across the Persian Gulf and Middle East. According to a Pentagon Inspector General report titled ‘Operation Epic Fury,’ Iranian attacks have damaged or destroyed hundreds of buildings and facilities in countries including Bahrain, Kuwait, Qatar, the United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia, Iraq, Oman, and Jordan.

As a result, the U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) has been forced to relocate personnel, equipment, and storage facilities. The damage to the regional naval center in Bahrain has created significant difficulties in securing adequate support ports. Consequently, the Navy’s logistical center of gravity is shifting toward the Indian Ocean.

While Diego Garcia provides a necessary refuge from Iranian missile threats, its distance from the primary theater of operations has extended supply chains, resulting in resupply cycles of 14 to 18 days. This shift has caused intermittent supply shortages and disruptions to regional military postal systems. The increased strategic importance of the Chagos Archipelago also reignites sovereignty debates between Mauritius and the United Kingdom.
