Diego Garcia military base reports of unidentified drones
Reports have emerged regarding unidentified drones spotted near the Diego Garcia military installation in the Indian Ocean. Since August 11, social media accounts affiliated with the Air Force have claimed that drones were sighted near the base’s fuel depot, leading to allegations that a curfew was imposed on military personnel.
The UK Ministry of Defence confirmed awareness of the reports but declined to provide specific details. Similarly, the US Pacific Command (PACOM) has not commented on the incident or any protective measures taken. While the claims regarding a curfew and specific sightings have not been independently verified by TWZ, the reports raise questions about the vulnerability of this remote and strategically vital US installation.
Diego Garcia has previously been identified as a priority target for Iran. In February, F-16 fighter jets were deployed to the island to defend against drones and cruise missiles, and during Operation Epic Fury, Iran launched two ballistic missiles toward the base, though neither struck. The sightings highlight potential threats from long-range or sea-launched drones capable of reaching remote locations.
