Diego Luna presents migration drama at Toronto Film Festival

Mexican actor and director Diego Luna presented his film ‘Ceniza en la boca’ at the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF). The film is an adaptation of the novel by Brenda Navarro and explores the emotional toll of migration.

The story follows a young woman and her brother traveling from Mexico to Madrid to reunite with their mother, who has lived in Spain irregularly for eight years to support them. The narrative examines the complexities of family separation, addressing themes of racism, precarious living conditions, and the differing perspectives of a mother and daughter regarding sacrifice and abandonment.

A co-production between Mexico and Spain, the film was previously featured as a Special Screening at the Cannes Film Festival. Luna co-adapted the screenplay alongside Abia Castillo and Diego Rabasa.
