Diego Maradona death trial: Expert testifies doctors ignored cardiac warning signs

During the trial regarding the death of Diego Armando Maradona, cardiologist Gustavo Di Niro testified that the medical team in charge failed to respond to critical warning signs of cardiac failure. Di Niro, a member of the Interdisciplinary Medical Board, stated that Maradona exhibited several alarming symptoms during his final two weeks of home treatment, including difficulty breathing, fluid accumulation, altered consciousness, tachycardia, and high blood pressure.

Di Niro argued that these indicators should have prompted an increase in the complexity of medical care, yet the attending physicians did not change their conduct. The accused doctors in the case are neurosurgeon Leopoldo Luque and psychiatrist Agustina Cosachov.

In reviewing Maradona's medical history, the expert highlighted a previous diagnosis of dilated cardiomyopathy resulting from toxic substance use, which causes chronic and permanent damage. It was also noted that Maradona had reportedly stopped taking hypertension medication shortly before his death, a practice the expert noted is generally not done even when heart function appears to improve.
