Maradona death trial paused after daughter's crisis over autopsy video
A criminal trial in Argentina investigating the 2020 death of football legend Diego Armando Maradona has been suspended after his daughter Gianinna Maradona suffered a nervous breakdown when a video of the autopsy was shown without warning. The video, presented by neuro‑surgeon Leopoldo Luque, prompted Gianinna to leave the courtroom, insult the doctor and request immediate suspension, which judges granted until the following Tuesday.
Medical experts testifying at the trial, including intensive‑care physician Mario Schiter, have criticised the post‑surgery care of Maradona, arguing that a third‑level rehabilitation centre should have been used and that administering diuretics could have improved his condition within 48 hours. The autopsy revealed three and a half litres of fluid in Maradona’s body, indicating chronic heart failure and congestive edema.
Diego Maradona Jr. has repeatedly pleaded for justice, alleging medical negligence and claiming his father was kept under psychotropic drugs in a semi‑conscious state. Seven health professionals face charges of simple homicide with eventual intent, with potential sentences of up to 25 years. The trial, reopened on 14 April, continues to draw intense public and media attention in Argentina.
