Diego Maradona medical negligence trial continues in Argentina

Legal proceedings against seven members of Diego Maradona's medical team have been ongoing since April, alleging negligence contributed to the football legend's death in 2020 from heart failure and acute pulmonary oedema. The trial, originally expected to end in August, has already seen more than 25 hearings and over 70 witness and defendant statements, with no clear conclusion in sight.

Personal doctor Leopoldo Luque, the main accused, has attended every hearing, presenting audio recordings, scientific papers and even demonstrating autopsy footage, actions that have provoked emotional reactions from Maradona's daughters. Judges have had to intervene repeatedly to manage heated exchanges between the daughters' lawyer Fernando Burlando and the defendants' counsel Francisco Oneto, leading to suspended sessions and public disputes.
