Maradona death trial suspended over incorrect medical tests
The trial investigating the death of Argentine football legend Diego Maradona has faced new controversy after it was revealed that the medical board may have mistakenly analyzed kidney tests belonging to his father, Don Diego, who died in 2015. The error was identified by defense lawyers during recent hearings, leading to a one-week suspension of the trial to review the evidence.
Medical experts testifying in San Isidro have highlighted significant gaps in the care Maradona received during his home recovery in November 2020. Nephrologist Hernán Trimarchi testified that Maradona’s chronic kidney disease and weight fluctuations should have served as critical warning signs. He further noted a lack of blood test records during the two-week convalescence period.
Toxicologist Carlos Damin described Maradona as a high-risk patient due to his history of cocaine and alcohol use, stating that he lacked a treating cardiologist during his home care. Medical examiner Carlos Cassinelli also testified that Maradona exhibited several life-threatening symptoms, including respiratory difficulties, edema, and hypertension, which were allegedly ignored by his medical team. Seven healthcare professionals are currently facing charges of criminal negligence.
