During the criminal trial of seven health‑care professionals accused of negligence in the death of Argentine football legend Diego Maradona, his former masseur Nicolas Taffarel testified that the 60‑year‑old star was bedridden, heavily edematous and refused to get up, eat, bathe or receive massages in the weeks before his death. Taffarel said Maradona told him on 24 November 2020, a day before he died, “No quiero nada, ya está” (“I want nothing, that’s it”). He warned the medical team to visit daily, but doctors reassured him that the swelling and other symptoms were normal. The trial is being held in Oral Criminal Court No. 7 in San Isidro, near Buenos Aires, and the defendants face up to 25 years in prison. Maradona had undergone brain surgery about two weeks earlier and his diuretic medication had been stopped shortly before his death, which occurred on 25 November 2020 at his home in Tigre, Argentina.
