Diego Maradona's final days detailed in trial testimony
Diego Maradona died on 25 November 2020 while under home care in Tigre, a suburb of Buenos Aires, after a recent neuro‑surgery. Seven members of his medical team are being tried in San Isidro for alleged negligence that may have contributed to his death.
Masseur Nicolas Taffarel, who visited Maradona almost daily, testified that the former football star was bedridden, heavily edematous and refused to eat, bathe or receive massages. He recounted Maradona’s last words to him on 24 November as “No quiero nada, ya está” (“I don’t want anything, that’s it”). Taffarel said he repeatedly warned the doctors to be present every day, observing worsening swelling and a lack of decisive action.
Nurse Ricardo Almirón also testified, noting a slight tachycardia and loss of appetite in the weeks before death and confirming Maradona’s vital signs the night before he died. The testimony highlighted differing medical opinions on the exact time of death, with one expert suggesting a midday death and another indicating a prolonged agonising period.
