Dien Hai Citadel discovery of 168-year-old cannon in Da Nang
A 2.95-meter-long cast iron cannon was discovered during renovation work at the Dien Hai Citadel, a special national relic in Da Nang, Vietnam. The artifact was found approximately 1 to 1.5 meters underground while workers were relocating an electrical pole foundation.
Huy Dinh Quoc Thien, Director of the Da Nang Museum, stated that the cannon is estimated to be about 168 years old. It may have been part of the weaponry system deployed by the Nguyen Dynasty for defense, or specifically used during the resistance against the French-Spanish alliance between 1858 and 1860.
This discovery brings the total number of cannons found at the site to ten. Experts from the Da Nang Museum are currently conducting a meticulous excavation to preserve the artifact and conduct further research to confirm its exact historical role and origin.
