Diesel demand drops 14% in Hungary’s used‑car market, VW Passat remains top model

Interest in diesel‑powered used cars fell by about 14% in the first four months of 2026 compared with the same period a year earlier, according to data from a Hungarian auto‑trading portal. Despite the decline, the Volkswagen Passat stays the most sought‑after diesel model, receiving 26,677 enquiries – nearly 50% more than the runner‑up BMW X series.

The average Passat on the market is 13.4 years old, has logged roughly 263,000 km and is listed for around HUF 3.8 million. By contrast, BMW X models are younger (about 9.4 years), much pricier (average HUF 11.5 million) and occupy the second spot. German brands dominate the top ten diesel listings, with only Ford’s Focus representing a non‑German manufacturer. While overall diesel interest wanes, average prices rose month‑on‑month, indicating that remaining buyers are willing to pay more for newer or better‑condition vehicles as the market shifts toward hybrids and electric cars.
