Diesel price surges trigger trucking bankruptcies and Russian import deal
Surging diesel prices have triggered a wave of financial instability across the American transportation sector. At least 16 trucking, delivery, and transportation companies filed for bankruptcy between late August and September 21, 2026. These filings include both Chapter 11 reorganizations and Chapter 7 liquidations, affecting sectors such as general freight, agricultural hauling, and construction materials.
National diesel prices reached a record average of $6.53 per gallon in late September 2026, a significant increase from approximately $3.68 a year prior. While prices have recently eased to around $6.20–$6.28 per gallon, the elevated costs continue to squeeze profit margins for carriers and small business owners, including food truck operators.
In response to the fuel crisis, President Donald Trump announced an agreement with Russia to supply over 300,000 metric tons of diesel to global and U.S. markets immediately. To facilitate this, the U.S. Treasury’s OFAC issued General License 135, which permits the importation of Russian-origin diesel into the United States through April 7, 2027. Experts and industry representatives have noted that while these measures aim to alleviate shortages, the impact on global market prices may be limited due to existing refinery capacity constraints and the relatively small volume of the immediate Russian supply.
