Diesel prices in Greece rise above 2 euros per liter

Diesel prices in Greece have risen to approximately 2.06 euros per liter, up from 1.54 euros in September, representing a 34% increase within a year. This surge is driven by Brent crude prices exceeding 100 dollars per barrel.

Data from ELSTAT confirms significant economic pressure, noting that diesel prices rose by 30.6% in August compared to the previous year. Additionally, gasoline increased by 15.3%, while natural gas saw a 40.2% spike. These rising energy and transport costs have contributed to an acceleration in general inflation, which rose to 3.8% from 3.4% in July.

The impact on businesses is substantial. For a single heavy truck traveling 10,000 kilometers per month, the monthly fuel cost increases from 4,620 euros to 6,180 euros—an additional 1,560 euros per month or 18,720 euros annually. For a small transport company with five such vehicles, the annual burden could exceed 93,000 euros. Given that fuel accounts for roughly one-third of annual operating costs for road transport companies, a 34% increase in fuel prices can raise total operating costs by more than 11%.
