Diesel spill contaminates Rosarito Canyon stream in Mexico
Approximately 9,000 liters of diesel spilled into the Cañón Rosarito stream after a tanker truck owned by the company Dagal overturned due to a mechanical failure on October 19. The spill contaminated nearly two kilometers of the waterway.
Authorities from Playas de Rosarito, in coordination with Public Works, installed dikes and absorbent materials to contain the fuel and prevent it from reaching the beach. While most of the diesel has been recovered, residues remain embedded in the soil. Additionally, approximately 17,000 liters of water were contained and are scheduled to be extracted by Dagal.
Environmental officials have warned of potential damage to the subsoil, vegetation, and local fauna. Residents in nearby ranching areas have been advised to avoid contact with the contaminated water, refrain from using it for irrigation, and ensure livestock do not consume it. Dagal is responsible for the cleanup and residue removal, with initial work expected to last one week followed by environmental sampling.
