Naviglio Grande diesel spill stretches 28 km from Magenta to Milan
A major environmental emergency is unfolding in the Naviglio Grande canal following a large diesel spill originating near Pontevecchio in Magenta. The hydrocarbon slick has stretched approximately 28 kilometers, reaching the Darsena in central Milan.
Authorities have deployed seven containment barriers and absorbent materials to mitigate the spread and protect irrigation channels used for agriculture. While efforts have successfully slowed the advance toward the Darsena, some residues have reached the area, accompanied by a strong odor of used oil. Navigation and water-based sports activities on the canal have been suspended for safety and cleanup operations.
The spill has caused significant damage to local biodiversity. A swan was rescued in Abbiategrasso after being covered in the thick substance, and a dove was reported dead in Magenta. Claudio De Paola, Director of the Ticino Park, noted that the impact on fish fauna and the irrigation system is substantial.
Investigations into the cause are ongoing. Initial hypotheses suggest the spill may have resulted from an accidental pipe perforation during scheduled sewer maintenance in Magenta, though some reports suggest the possibility of an intentional act. Cleanup and monitoring operations are expected to continue for several days.
