Diet and Metabolic Syndrome Impact Brain Health, Study Finds
Experts highlight that a nutrient‑rich diet supports brain function. Foods high in omega‑3 fatty acids, vitamins, minerals and antioxidants—such as nuts, seeds, oily fish, leafy greens and berries—are linked to better memory, concentration and slower cognitive decline.
A Swedish research team analyzed brain scans and blood samples from more than 27,000 UK adults aged 40‑70. Their study, published in Alzheimer's & Dementia, found that individuals with metabolic syndrome showed brains that appeared older than their chronological age. Participants with three syndrome components had brains roughly one year older, four components added 1.7 years, and five components added about 2.3 years. Each component, including hypertension and high blood sugar, independently contributed to accelerated brain aging.
