Roman Yampolskiy warns of existential risk from AI

AI safety expert Roman Yampolskiy has issued a warning that artificial intelligence could lead to the extinction of humanity within the next century. Speaking on the Lex Fridman podcast, Yampolskiy estimated a 99.9 percent probability of such a catastrophic outcome.

He argued that because no currently deployed AI system has proven to be fully reliable, it is unlikely that future, more advanced systems will be free from catastrophic errors. While Yampolskiy holds this extreme view, other researchers suggest significantly lower risks. A study involving more than 2,700 AI experts indicated a 5 percent risk of human extinction, highlighting a lack of consensus among technology leaders regarding the existential threats posed by rapidly advancing AI.
