Diet quality linked to improved lung function in large study
A large-scale study published in ERJ Open Research suggests that high-quality nutrition is linked to better lung function and a slower decline in respiratory capacity. The research, led by Arturo F. Martínez-Rodríguez of the University of Groningen, utilized data from the Lifelines study, a long-term cohort project in the Netherlands.
Analyzing over 83,000 individuals, researchers found that a higher diet score was associated with improved respiratory metrics, including FEV1 and FVC. These benefits were particularly pronounced in individuals living with asthma or chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), conditions that typically make breathing difficult due to airway obstruction or inflammation.
The study monitored participants over nearly a decade, using the Lifelines Diet Score to estimate nutritional quality. While factors like smoking, pollution, and age naturally impact lung health, the findings indicate that dietary patterns play a significant role in managing and potentially protecting respiratory function in vulnerable populations.
