Dietary and medical approaches to managing inflammation

Medical research and dietary guidelines are focusing on new ways to manage both acute and chronic inflammation. While traditional treatments involve corticosteroids and biological therapies to block immune mediators, scientists are now investigating how to modulate the inflammatory response by understanding why the natural resolution process fails.

Chronic systemic inflammation is linked to various conditions, including metabolic and vascular diseases, obesity, type 2 diabetes, and neurodegenerative processes. For chronic inflammatory bowel diseases like Crohn's disease or ulcerative colitis, experts such as gastroenterologist Paolo Gionchetti suggest the Mediterranean diet as a suitable anti-inflammatory foundation, though no single standard diet exists.

Specific dietary recommendations vary depending on the type of inflammation. For gynecological issues such as adnexitis, pelvic inflammatory disease, cervicitis, or vaginitis, experts generally recommend light, easily digestible foods, fruits, vegetables, and high water intake. Conversely, patients are advised to avoid alcohol, nicotine, seafood, spicy foods, highly processed sugars, and fried products to prevent further irritation.
