Dietary and nutritional approaches to supporting liver health
Nutrient-rich dietary choices and certain supplements may support liver function and overall digestive health. While no single food can fully "detox" the liver, specific ingredients have shown potential in scientific studies.
Garlic contains allicin and organosulphur compounds that provide antioxidant and anti-inflammatory benefits. Research suggests garlic may help regulate non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) by modulating lipid and glucose metabolism. Turmeric, through its active compound curcumin, is also noted for its anti-inflammatory properties.
Liver function is closely linked to digestion via bile production. Bile acts as a detergent to break down fats, and sluggish bile release can lead to bloating or discomfort after high-fat meals. Common supplement ingredients studied for liver support include milk thistle (silymarin), artichoke, dandelion, and citrus extracts.
Experts emphasize that supplements cannot replace medical care, balanced eating, or professional diagnosis. A healthy liver workload is best maintained through a foundation of fiber, hydration, sleep, physical movement, and moderate alcohol consumption.
