Dietary antioxidants linked to lower cervical cancer risk
A new analysis of health data from the United States suggests that a woman’s overall diet may influence the likelihood of developing cervical cancer. The study found that women who consumed higher amounts of antioxidant nutrients through their diets had a noticeably lower prevalence of the disease.
Researchers noted that these findings do not imply that specific foods can directly prevent cancer from forming. Instead, the results provide a new avenue to investigate the connections between nutrition, immune function, and cervical health. While nearly all cervical cancer cases are linked to persistent infections with high-risk types of human papillomavirus (HPV), scientists are looking into factors that might influence cellular changes following an initial infection.
Antioxidants, which include various vitamins and minerals found in fruits, vegetables, beans, nuts, and seeds, help control harmful chemical reactions in the body, particularly during cellular stress. The study utilized a combined measure of these nutrients rather than examining single vitamins in isolation.
