Dietary changes significantly impact cholesterol levels
A study from Laval University in Quebec, Canada, demonstrates that dietary adjustments can significantly reduce LDL cholesterol levels within just four weeks, even in individuals with familial hypercholesterolemia. The research compared a standard American diet against a predominantly plant-based diet, where 82 percent of calories were derived from plant sources such as vegetables, fruits, whole grains, legumes, nuts, and seeds.
Medical experts note that while high cholesterol is a major risk factor for cardiovascular diseases like heart attacks and strokes, lifestyle interventions remain critical. Approximately 58 percent of Germans are reported to have elevated cholesterol levels. Experts recommend replacing saturated fats, found in products like butter and fatty meats, with unsaturated fats from plant oils, nuts, or seeds to help manage these levels.
In addition to cholesterol management, health professionals emphasize that controlling blood pressure through regular exercise, stress reduction, and weight management is essential for preventing cardiovascular complications.
