Dietary experts discuss heart health and nutritional choices
Medical experts are highlighting the impact of specific dietary choices on long-term cardiovascular health. Harlan Krumholz, a professor at the Yale School of Medicine, identifies the bacon double cheeseburger as a food he would avoid due to its high levels of saturated fat and sodium.
Krumholz notes that while occasional consumption is not critical, regular intake can contribute to cardiovascular issues. High saturated fat can increase LDL cholesterol levels, potentially leading to arterial buildup, while excessive sodium can contribute to fluid retention and elevated blood pressure.
In contrast, dietary experts suggest that incorporating legumes like beans can support heart health and weight management. Beans provide a combination of protein and fiber that slows stomach emptying and stabilizes blood sugar. They also contain essential nutrients such as potassium, folate, and magnesium, and their soluble fiber can help bind cholesterol in the digestive system, preventing its absorption into the bloodstream.
