Dietary fiber and plant-based foods linked to improved sleep quality

A new study published in the journal ‘Nature Health’ suggests that dietary patterns significantly influence sleep quality. Researchers analyzed data from a large-scale, long-term digital health study, finding that diets rich in fiber and a diverse range of plant-based foods are linked to improved sleep parameters, including increased deep sleep and REM sleep.

Marie-Pierre St-Onge, a professor of nutritional medicine at Columbia University Irving Medical Center, noted that fruits and vegetables contain compounds that may interact with GABA receptors in the brain, potentially promoting calmness in the nervous system to facilitate sleep. Recommendations for better sleep include consuming proteins, fiber, fruits, and vegetables. While heavier evening meals were associated with slightly longer sleep duration, the study noted this sleep might not necessarily be the most restorative.

In addition to general dietary advice, certain Mediterranean-style foods—such as legumes, nuts, and whole grains—are highlighted for their benefits. One specific recipe mentioned involves beans inspired by the flavors of spanakopita.
