Dietary fiber and specific foods aid digestive health

Nutritionists highlight specific foods that can aid digestive health and alleviate constipation through fiber, water content, and microbiome support.

Lauren Manaker, speaking to Verywell Health, recommends cooked spinach as a premier choice for managing constipation. Its effectiveness stems from a combination of dietary fiber, which adds bulk to stool, and high water content, which helps maintain softness. Additionally, spinach acts as a prebiotic, supporting beneficial gut bacteria. Other beneficial options include broccoli, Brussels sprouts, and sweet potatoes with the skin left on.

Regarding breakfast options, nutritionist Amanda Sauseda notes that chia seeds are an efficient way to increase fiber intake. Two tablespoons can provide approximately 10 grams of fiber. Chia seeds contain both soluble and insoluble fiber; the soluble fiber forms a gel that increases stool volume and eases movement through the digestive tract. They also provide omega-3 fatty acids and antioxidants. Oats are also noted for their beta-glucan content, a type of soluble fiber that acts as a prebiotic for gut microbes.
