Dietary fiber and sugar intake impact blood sugar and sleep

Nutrition experts highlight the significant impact of sugar and fiber consumption on blood sugar levels, energy, and sleep quality. Consuming high-sugar foods, particularly for breakfast or late at night, can cause rapid spikes and subsequent drops in blood glucose. This cycle often leads to increased hunger, cravings, and potential weight gain.

Dr. Mark Hyman advises against starting the day with sugary cereals or pancakes, suggesting that protein-rich breakfasts are a superior alternative to prevent insulin spikes. Similarly, nutritionists note that diets high in glycemic index foods are linked to higher risks of insomnia.

To counteract these effects, experts recommend increasing dietary fiber intake through vegetables, whole grains, and legumes. Fiber helps slow digestion and the absorption of nutrients into the bloodstream, promoting more gradual blood sugar changes. High-fiber foods also increase satiety by activating stretch receptors in the stomach and delaying gastric emptying.
